Many of my students, because of a lack of resources and quality educators in under-funded schools in the area, are not reading on-level when they get to me in the 11th and 12th grades. While I work with them in class to improve their reading skills, it is truly through independent reading that they will develop and practice their reading fluency and vocabulary acquisition. If I can provide a diverse library of reading materials that students have access to during the pandemic, I can encourage students to keep up their reading skills even while struggling with more complex materials in class. Studies have also shown that good readers make good writers, allowing them to emulate the complex sentence structures of authors they admire. Your support is instrumental in providing quality, high-interest materials for this independent reading collection.
