Military children make up over half of the student population at our middle school. My students have parents in deployed (or deploying) units at all times during the school year. Because of this necessity (and divorced households), more than 2/3 of our population are living in a single parent household at any given time. Many of our students are on free/reduced lunch and 50+ students are supported by our school's FUEL program with more applying as students arrive each week. Access to current technology is not a reality for many of my students outside of school. Our students understand that they could be asked to move at any moment, so they are very passionate about making their voices heard. I think this mentality, with the right guidance, can give them the power to elicit positive change in their current community and create lifelong learners that will be successful wherever they go.
