These books will provide my students with opportunities to see themselves as the protagonist. A study by Sarah Park Dahlen found that 50% of children’s books that were published in 2018 had White protagonists, followed by 27% of books with an animal/other as a a protagonist. This lack of diversity in children’s books, and thus a lack of representation, is another way BIPOC students feel othered. By donating to our project, you will help my students gain access to books and materials that reflect their identities as BIPOC and emergent bilinguals. As an educator of color, I know what it’s like to not have books that reflect my community and culture and I don’t want my students to have to go through that. I don’t want their voices and identities to be seen as other and silenced. I want to provide my students with opportunities to “Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors” through these books.
