Sometimes teaching history and literature themes can be a bit challenging without the appropriate materials, and that is why I seek your help. One message that I try to teach every year is that we may have different cultures, backgrounds, and history, but we all share the same human traits. We seek to find courage within ourselves, we show compassion and love, and we stand together when something is not right. These themes that can be discovered in the pages of books. In an effort to teach and support my students, I am hoping to fundraise and buy a class set of two historical and cultural books: Sounder and Esperanza Rising. These wonderful novels teach my students powerful literature themes such as friendship, hope, love, perseverance, leadership, empathy, humility, and acceptance. The Newbery Award Winning book Sounder is about an African-American boy and his sharecropper family. This book describes the realism of poverty and hardship of farm workers. Desperate to feed his family, the boy’s father steals a ham. When the police show up to arrest him, the family dog named Sounder attempts to fight the police and gets shot. The boy goes on to search for his father along the country and dreams to be in school. Esperanza Rising is about a young girl named Esperanza (which means Hope) who lives in a ranch in Mexico when suddenly a tragedy forces her and her mother to flee to flee to California during the Great Depression, and to settle in a camp for Mexican Farm Workers. Please help me raise enough money to purchase these wonderful novels and empower my students to learn these valuable character traits and life lessons. Thank you for your support!
