The best way to teach middle school General Music is to provide students with an opportunity to learn to play an instrument. This hands-on approach to learning music makes the class interesting and relevant. I currently teach General Music in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade every year. The class is currently set up so that I teach music history, then reading music notation, and then students learn to apply their music reading skills by playing bucket drums and ukuleles. One of the problems that arise when I teach ukulele in three different grade levels is that I often have the same students for more than one year, so the students who already learned ukulele in 6th or 7th grade are bored with the ukulele. It would be great to provide my older General Music students a different instrument to learn to play so that all of the students will be on a similar level. I think the piano would be a great instrument to teach in upper-level General Music classes because students have already shown interest in learning to play the piano. I have an upright piano and two keyboards in my classroom already, and my students are always asking if they can explore them. Several students have shared that they want to take piano lessons but I know that their families cannot afford for them to take private lessons outside of school. The donation of a class set of keyboards will give 15 more students per General Music class the opportunity to learn to play the piano. My vision for the future of my General Music program is to teach a different instrument in each grade level (ukulele in 6th, bucket drums in 7th, and piano in 8th) so that students will not have the same instrument twice.
