My students are 3rd and 4th graders who are reading below grade level. We meet every day in small groups to become better readers by exploring different stories together. My students love reading about gross stuff like flies and body parts and messes (authors Tedd Arnold and Robert Munsch are great for that!). They love books with African-American characters (like Bill Cosby's books or Amazing Grace!). They want to read books about sharks and tigers and pirates and bats and lots of other cool things about the world. They especially love when we get to do hands-on-activities inspired by our books, like the salsa we made from directions in a picture book or the candy castles (pictured) they designed after reading about a woman who became famous for her "candy creations." My students all want to be better readers. I want them to love reading so this process can be an exhilarating, fascinating, rambunctious ride through books!
