I work with a range of students on the Autism Spectrum, and a key element of our classroom is social-emotional learning with an emphasis on learning to self-regulate and creating opportunities for teamwork through cooperative learning experiences. With the added challenge of COVID-19 and switching from older to younger grades, I need to build a super sensory area with materials that can be easily cleaned between brain breaks and still meet the needs of my students. With the materials listed in my project-like blocks, LEGOs, and light table manipulatives, students will be able to use take meaningful brain breaks (usually as a way to self-regulate between academic tasks) while they work on fine motor skills, spatial awareness, cooperative play, and more! As a teacher, I can use these materials to add kinesthetic and engaging learning opportunities into my whole group and small group instruction. For example, I can use the Let's Talk Puppet set in my daily social groups to model expected behavior and then have the kids practice too! Thank you for your consideration; my students and I value your support as we navigate these unique times.
