All of my students have special communication needs, whether it is language comprehension, expression, articulation, or something else. Reading at or slightly above their current level is one great way to address multiple skill areas at once. My students enjoy the pictures and are much more likely to succeed when they have access to books that interest them that are not too easy and not too hard. Through books we can target a variety of goals, including reading comprehension and fluency, vocabulary, and language expression through summarizing and answering questions. Teachers Pay Teachers has many other materials that I use often with my students, including speech and language goal-oriented games, low tech AAC materials, and other speech and language activities that my students love and learn from. Many of my students are learning to express themselves through writing, and we do a lot of writing in our therapy sessions and in the classroom. Because many of them also have poor fine motor skills, they write better with the old-fashioned wooden pencils rather than the mechanical ones. A pencil sharpener would be a great addition to my office so that my students have quick access while we are working in there.
