Although our classroom is full of second graders, over a third of my class is reading on a kindergarten level. One important aspect of reading they are missing is confidence. The books I have available for them to read independently in order to gain confidence have repeated text. This means the readers use pictures to read the story instead of reading skills. They don't get any further in reading by guessing words based on pictures. My amazing students need books they can read independently while also applying and growing their reading skills! When my students hear themselves using their reading skills, it breaks their mindset that they can't read and they begin to see themselves as readers! The Bob Book Sets help my students apply the beginning phonics skills they have. The Dick and Jane Sets help my students gain fluency in learning and recognizing their sight words. The Mo Willems Set helps my students apply both their phonics and sight word skills in an engaging and entertaining way that launches them into reading more challenging texts. With these books, my students on all reading levels can feel confident when they are asked to pull out a book and read!
