My students endured over a year of reading solely off of a computer screen during which our class texts were also dictated by what stories were available in an online version. In the 2020 school year, these constraints resulted in my students reading a number of antiquated texts that did not always spark a love of reading in the way that an ELA class should. This project will help us procure class copies (and a few loaner copies for home!) of texts that are relevant and engaging. My students deserve to receive modern anchor texts and curriculum that are tailored to their interests and cultures. Having class copies means that each student will be able to read from the book itself instead of off of a computer screen without putting social distancing or COVID-19 safety protocols at stake. It will also help us have group and independent reading time that is unaffected by if a student's device is charged or forgotten at home. The texts we will be reading this year are Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood and Manga Shakespeare: Twelfth Night. Born a Crime is a personal narrative written by comedian and The Daily Show host Trevor Noah that details his childhood as a biracial child during the South African apartheid era. Born a Crime reckons with questions of identity and belongingness in the wake of a political revolution and centuries-long institutional racism. Next, the manga adaption of Twelfth Night will make Shakespeare's language and rhyme schemes more digestible for my 6th grade students while also catering to their interests and love of manga and graphic novels.
