In the past, my reading lessons have always followed the Reader's Workshop model, in which I teach whole-group direct instruction during a very small portion of the period. This protects sacred time for students to read silently in class and for me to provide highly specific, individualized instruction to meet the needs of my students where they are performing. However, this year, I am mandated to keep social distance between all my students and myself, rendering small group instruction an impossibility. With clear pane barriers, I am able to sit with students in small groups to teach skills, strategies and assess learning that is uniquely meeting their needs, avoiding the "one size fits all" model of teaching (as well as any virus germs they may be passing along!).
