My students will be working online from home via Google Classroom. They will be viewing and responding to a painting named The Anguish of Being and the Nothingness of the Universe (La angustia de ser y la nada universal), 2020, by Marcos Rayas. The image is an abstract depiction of a face, which is the inside view of a mask. For this art project students will be creating their own painting of a mask "from the inside". Since they are working at home many of my students do not have art supplies and my class supplies are too limited to provide each student an individual watercolor palette. Many of us take for granted that using paint is natural and happens in each child's experience. However, when someone comes from an impoverished home, art supplies may not be available or prioritized. During this covid crisis we have all seen time and again how the arts have given all of us the outlet to express ourselves. We see people creating murals, having dance parties, singing from their balconies. Please, give my students, who have no art supplies the chance to express themselves and how they see their mask from the inside with paint during this time of covid.
