Distance learning started on April 13, 2020 because of COVID-19 and will continue until January 29, 2021. It was sometimes challenging to help students navigate their devices in the spring. They were often using devices different from my laptop. The steps to complete or access an assignment on their device was different than on my PC. A program that worked on my laptop did not work on their device. I want to be preemptive to ensure that students are focusing on learning and not struggling with device issues. Since kindergarten students will be using iPads, I would like an iPad. I would be able to troubleshoot potential problems my students might have and be prepared to support them; preview a lesson or assignment on the iPad and correct any issues before my students even see it; and show exactly what they need to do when using their device. Since kindergarten students are so young, they will sometimes need the support of their parents. Screenshots of the iPad screen would be beneficial when developing instructions for parents to help them support their child. Those pictures would provide visuals to accompany the bilingual text of the directions. A webcam would be useful in multiple ways. It would allow students to watch and copy as I demonstrate step-by-step what they need to do on their iPad. Even students with limited English language skills would be able to understand and follow - a picture is worth a thousand words! When school starts, we will need to do live lessons. I will be setting up a classroom in my home. A webcam would allow students to see me as I demonstrate how to form the letters of the alphabet on my whiteboard or model how to complete an assignment.
