All of our students want to learn to play the drums. This project not only addresses learning music and rhythms, it encompasses social and emotional learning goals. Having a set of percussion instruments only will this increase our musical expression, it will serve as music therapy, a program greatly needed in our title 1 school. The calming effect of joining a drum circle is evident as soon as the student sits down. This year, we had 30 students engage in our after school music program. With the addition of percussion instruments, I foresee this number increasing dramatically. The percussion instruments will also be used in class for all grade levels. For some students, music is the one place where they are successful. Drumming is one way to engage all students from high learners to those with learning difficulties in the same class activity creating an atmosphere of community and inclusivity. It is my goal to provide a musical experience that is welcoming, inclusive, and fun.
