Fifth grade math means fractions! The most complex and abstract concept I seem to teach to these young minds every year is fractions. Sometimes simply the concept of what a fraction is can be challenging, but in 5th grade-that's just the beginning. Fifth graders are required to add, subtract, multiply, divide, compare, order, reduce, honestly, the list goes on and on. I want to give my students what I didn't get when I learned about fractions-a way to SEE what the heck was going on! Most kids learn better when they can put their hands on things and use that tactile learning to help their understanding. That's what I know these math manipulatives will give my students-the opportunity to visualize what a fraction is, and how to use them. Kids always ask me "that" question. You know the one, "Why do I need to learn this?" Honestly, there are things I teach that sometimes it can be a stretch for me to answer that question. Fractions are NOT one of them. Fractions will be used by every student I teach for the rest of their lives. It is my goal to make sure when they leave my class they know and understand fractions and how important they are in life. Your support of my project will help me reach this goal.
