Giving students the ability to read a story that they can personally connect with makes ALL the difference when trying to "infect" our students with the reading bug! During Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15) would be the optimal time to introduce a new diversity read into the classroom. Good books will teach our students to be accepting of diversity, inclusion, and kindness, which our world desperately needs today! By giving our STEM students the opportunity to connect with others that are different than them gives them the ability to gain an invaluable skill; empathy. Something our world needs more today than ever before! That is why I know that the book I am requesting, Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson, is the right choice to start my students on a journey of learning to both embrace their roots, AND seek new possibilities!
