It is no secret that our world is rapidly changing, and the rules by which today’s adults learned to play will likely be less relevant to our students when they leave our schools. At the institutional level, many schools have historically failed to address examples of racial inequity and unjust treatment in our country. The good news is that our students can re-write these rules if we provide them with tools to think critically, be compassionate members of their communities, and education to understand and eliminate inequality. Our team has four core values central to the philosophy behind this project: 1) Embody a culture that is student-driven, 2) Act with purpose, 3) Embrace adventure, and 4) Serve as crew. The books we've selected will empower students to use our core values outside of our classroom as the stories encourage students to consider alternative perspectives and build empathy. We plan to have book study groups and facilitate conversations between students to help them process these stories, find strategies to move forward with inequity in mind, and understand their roles as allies for justice in our community.
