Children will strengthen their fine motor development through the use of these manipulatives. They learn control, communication, concentration and dedication to finishing tasks and problem-solving skills. With these new manipulatives, my students will each be able to choose a manipulative to use at their desks for the week. The children will build, draw, verbally share, and eventually (later in the year) write about what they created. Instead of giving our kids MORE work, let’s give them more MEANINGFUL work. Meaningful work should be hands-on, engaging, and open ended. Why?! Because children have a natural drive to play, explore, and engineer whenever possible. This will be a welcome change of pace for the students since they are expected to sit at their desks for the majority of the day.
