The inclusion of the book, The Hate U Give in my curriculum will help generate meaningful Socratic Seminars on the topic of race. This is especially important today with the nation and worldwide protests going on since the death of George Floyd. Students who read the book will also get a glimpse into what it is like to be a black teenager attempting to fit in with both her white friends at school and her predominately black community at home. Many students at our school live a pretty isolated life, in a school that is predominately white, and this book will be very eye-opening for them.
