Despite the warns of teachers in past generations, everyone does carry around a calculator in their pocket these days. Therefore, there is the idea students don't need physical, hand-held calculators in a math classroom. Instead students are directed to use an online calculators, in class, at home and for testing processes. While phone calculators are great for quick addition when figuring out a tip or the cost of something in the store, they are not ideal for a math classroom. Therefore, I am asking for help in getting a set of classroom calculators that can be used in the classroom, on testing days, and borrowed for home use. In the math classroom, online calculators don't cut it! First, cell phone calculators are not allowed on any standardized test, so while a student could use a phone for classwork and homework, they will get to that standardized test and not be able to use the calculator they have been studying with. Second, there is the issue of even the most well meaning student getting their phone out to use as a calculator and then getting distracted with a social media notifications or texts from a friend. Third, there are online calculators available through their laptops, that are accessible during state standardizing testing (but not allowed on tests like the SAT's and other national tests). The issue here is it requires students to bring their laptops, have them charged or plugged in (imagine 30 laptops cords plugged in all around the room, its a mess and safety hazard), taking up space on their crowded desks, taking up time to get started up. My students just need a pencil, paper, and a good hand-held calculator to do math. I'll get them the paper and pencil. Can you help give us the calculators?
