I am a dance teacher developing a new dance program and curriculum in a public high school that has never had dance before. I am in the second year of starting this program, and, as you can imagine, it has been challenging to say the least to develop a performing arts program during a global pandemic. My goal as a dance educator is to teach beyond just physical steps. I want this art form and my classroom to be somewhere students can freely express themselves, share their stories, and connect with their peers through their creativity, movement, and music. I want them to become more self-aware, more confident, and to develop healthy outlets to cope with the everyday stresses of being a teenager. Dance and mindful movement has always been that outlet for me, so I am hoping to hone those skills as an educator through this summer program with Breathe for Change. This training will provide me with tools to facilitate conversations centered around social-emotional learning and mental wellness for my students. It will also certify me in yoga and inspire more ways of how I can connect mindful movement into the everyday practice of my students. With this training, I will be able to set my students up for success both in and out of the classroom!
