Each year, most of my students walk through the classroom door saying, “I want to learn to read!” For many, starting the journey to become a reader is one of the most exciting parts of Kindergarten. At first, my students think that I wave a wand and suddenly they become readers. They quickly learn that reading is hard work and requires dedication from them, their family and me. Practice is an essential part of becoming a reader, and it is so important that the practice they do is with books that are "just right". For a book to be “just right” it needs to match the level of the reader. For beginning readers this can mean books with very few words on a page and a picture that very closely matches. Practice is essential for readers to apply the strategies that they are learning. During a typical school year much reading practice is done in the classroom, however this school year will be different. With fully remote and hybrid instructional models being considered, my students will need to do more of their reading practice at home. Sending home books with my students will ensure that they have the necessary reading materials to practice their reading skills. Having these materials will help families better support their readers. I will use these books and book bags to create home reading bags for my Kindergarten students. The text sets will supplement the materials that I have in my classroom so that I can send students home with a greater number of books. Even when my students and I are not together in our classroom, I want them to have access to physical books and not have to rely on ebooks, or books that are not a match for their reading level.
