I have wanted to build a classroom library for years, and I have been slowly accumulating books that would interest my students. I teach low-level freshmen who struggle with reading and writing. I want to provide high interest, diverse, and multi-genre books that they can choose to read on their own. These freshmen students will be able to choose a book from my classroom library, then earn points toward extra credit. I want them to choose to read because they want to, not because they are being forced to for a grade. These students can become very overwhelmed with trying to keep their grades up, and I don’t want them to see reading as just another stress-inducing assignment. By including texts that interest them, and also have voices from other cultures, I hope that I can foster in them a love of reading. I also teach junior and senior college-bound students. These classes are required to read a non-fiction text and then analyze the writer’s rhetorical choices. In the past, I have spent my own money on texts for these students, as we have a high number of students whose families are unable to afford to buy additional supplies. Slowly, I have acquired non-fiction texts that students can choose from; unfortunately, I do not have enough for every student. I am hoping that by building a classroom library, I will be able to provide diverse, high-interest texts that students will be interested in reading. Ultimately, I want to provide my students with texts that open their eyes to different perspectives and cultures while fostering a love of reading. I chose texts that I thought my students would be interested in reading, as well as texts from diverse authors and both fiction and nonfiction texts. Thank you for considering my project.
