While distance learning is a necessity right now, it is also poses a challenge in engaging students, especially first graders. Since we are not able to be in the classroom, my students need to be learn to work at home, and these are materials that can ease this transition and maximize learning. My goal in the classroom is to nurture the students minds and hearts, and I have selected materials that help me do so. To work on both their academic ability and their social emotional awareness, I have chosen books which promote accepting and appreciating diversity, kindness, nurturing creativity, and being proud of who you are. Books are just one part of the learning experience, especially for first graders - I have also chosen materials that provide a more hands-on, explorative learning experience for young minds. All of my choices were selected with a holistic lesson plan in mind; children are in need of creative outlets that combine educational necessities with coping processes during these turbulent times.
