As a Varying Exceptionalities teacher, I use whiteboards and materials to engage students (with disabilities who are in the general education classroom), check their understanding of a math strategy and encourage the student to practice the strategy in a routine way. Students with disabilities are able to grasp math strategies better when they are able to practice the strategy on a lined dry-erase board with accompanied marker and eraser. Sometimes, through overuse, the boards are stained, markers dry-up, and erasers are lost. New items can be found or borrowed from another class, however instructional time is lost. Due to COVID-19, students are required to have their own materials and cannot share with their classmates. By donating to our project, students with disabilities will have uninterrupted instruction time; they will have the ability to focus, engage in solving math problems, and practice with the donated materials. Engaging students in solving the math problems activates their ability to remember the strategy. Engagement solidifies learning--they are able to remember the strategy! Students need whiteboards and pouches. These items will enrich student learning. Materials encourage students to engage in math activities.
