I teach high school students with moderate to severe disabilities who thrive on structure and are adversely affected when change occurs. The sudden change due to the pandemic for the "normal" appearance of school will cause possible stress and anxiety for our students with special needs. By creating a clean and sensory-friendly environment, the students will be able to work within their new environment with the aid of items that aid or eliminate their sensory deficits. Our goal is to create a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for high school students with moderate to severe disabilities who need a place to relax with the appropriate sensory items which will be a benefit to their academic success and mental health. When they are able to attend on-site instruction, they will walk into an classroom that reduces the stress with a calming light and music projector along with an air purifier to cleanse the air of germs. The students will benefit from alternative seating desks to better suit their needs while working on assignments. Art supplies are needed to create tactile sensory area where they can use multiple types of supplies to express themselves or calm down through drawing. To assist with their stimming behaviors and provide multisensory activities such as sensory balls which will help them focus and reduce tension when working on classwork.
