After examining the state standards for both 8th grade science and honors Biology, I have narrowed the standards down to a couple topics that generally cause students to struggle-- evolution and climate change. However, not only are these topics students struggle with, but adults still get stuck on the details of these complex phenomena. If I am able to really hammer home these big ideas and can help students sort out the details while in 8th grade, I can hopefully, prevent misconceptions from spreading. My goal is by giving students a hands-on opportunity to explore these complex patterns in nature, it will create the conditions necessary for students to share what they are learning in school with their families at home! These kits I am requesting will give all of my students, regardless of their background knowledge about climate change and evolution, a robust opportunity to explore these concepts. The kit about bacterial resistance will be a perfect addition to our unit on bacteria and viruses, enriching our discussion about COVID-19 and the reason it has impacted so many people.
