We all know good reading skills are essential for life-long learning and success. One of my goals, as an elementary library media specialist, is to cultivate enthusiastic readers by exposing them to quality literature with diverse viewpoints while reading for pleasure. We already have many of these types of books in our school library, but many of our students face difficulty reading a large chapter book with pages filled with words after words I have seen it time and time again. They select a book they "want" to read, but rarely make it past the first chapter or two as evidenced by the bookmark still in the first few pages. I want our students to feel successful when reading chapter books and to develop confidence in reading. New research by Thorndike Press shows that students in grades three through twelve, who read large-print books, developed stronger reading skills, felt more comfortable reading and adopted new, positive reading mindsets. I strongly believe large print books will relieve much of the students' frustrations and anxiety when reading and help them feel success when they have finished reading a book. I also believe, as the study supports, students reading below grade level will improve their reading comprehension and retention as the reading will be more pleasurable and less stressful when reading large print books. I have selected twenty-five, quality books which are of interest to students. These will be available for students to check out to read at home or in the classroom. I believe our reluctant readers will become more motivated to read a larger chapter book and in turn, build and improve their literacy skills.
