Since returning to the classroom after COVID quarantine I am trying to engage my students as much as possible and enhance their social skills. In history we spend a lot of time working on historical connections in relation to our modern world in addition to getting to know one another better and building social skills with social studies. The goal is to increase their social skills by encouraging them to work together daily. Right now a lot of time is spent preparing them for their future in relation to connecting with all people regardless of race, income, and background. In addition I would like to help students to make better connections between past events in order to better understand current events as well as historical backgrounds and perspectives. My classroom is a place where kids can be themselves and work together to make positive changes. These changes can come from flexible seating, access to materials for group instruction/projects, tools they need to succeed such as a pencil sharpener, colored pencils, glue sticks and scissors. Aligned standards supporting diversity, investigation and equity include;SS.6-8.WGGS.14 (Describe the factors that shape identity - including institutions, religion, language, social class, geography, culture, and society),SS.6-8.WGGS.21 Investigate the ways in which individuals and nations build communities of respect, equity, and diversity across the world today andSS.6-8.WGGS.2 Evaluate various interpretations to answer compelling questions within and across disciplines.
