Kids dream about what they want to be when they grow up, but these dreams are often limited by what they see on television or hear from the adults around them. What if children don’t know a veterinarian, an engineer, a pilot, or a doctor. My students won’t know what jobs are possible if they don’t know the careers that exist. Giving them the opportunity to explore these career paths virtually could change their lives! Rather than just telling them, I want to actually show them. With these career Expeditions, students can travel outside the classroom walls and be exposed to more ideas, places, and opportunities than ever before. The overarching goal of this project is to prepare 5th-grade students for middle school and beyond. Typically 5th-grade students do not receive direct instruction on how to prepare for the differences between elementary and secondary education. They will learn goal setting and organizational skills to help them understand the importance of being prepared for their future endeavors.
