I am requesting building blocks, magna tiles and other materials to use together to develop relationships and expand on their creativity and interests. When students are in the process of exploring, building and creating they are learning valuable skills that apply to both academic and social-emotional development. My students have different learning styles as well as abilities and these materials allow access for all. Students will learn how to work together to cooperate and share materials. They develop their language skills and social skills as they talk with their peers and create together. They tell stories and talk through what they are making and share out what they are proud of. We also work on encouraging each other, asking questions and giving compliments. During this time students are engaged in problem solving, thinking through ideas, and working through frustrations when things don't work out as planned. Most importantly each student is able to use their imagination and express themselves through their creations and develop relationships with their classmates as well as myself. During this part of the day I find that I have the most opportunity to really talk with each student and get to know them better and build a relationship with each one. I have seen how much this relationship building positively affects each student during all parts of their day.
