Since March 13th my special needs students have been at home without the in-person educational services they require. I am their Physical Education teacher, but I do so much more than a traditional PE teacher. I am a therapist, both physical and occupational, but I get to do what not many other teachers get to do: focus on having fun! These materials I am requesting such as ring toss games and light up wands will help every type of student I serve. I serve students such as the active autistic student, the wheelchair bound student, the nonverbal student, and so many more. These activities will engage them, excite them, and support their parents/caregiver to help facilitate the lessons that I provide virtually (since April 2020). My students start every class with a warm up of music and movement. After we have warmed up we start our lesson of team sports broken down in small chunks, like the mechanics of a throw or the technique of a volleyball spike. For my students who can not move their bodies on their own I work with them by physically moving their limbs. My students need sensory breaks often, that is a great time to incorporate music or toys that light up.
