Our school's mission and vision is: “a community of learners who recognize the history of our institution and the power of its vision and voice to encourage critical thinking and compassion as a means of creating future leaders. We are committed to growing diverse leaders who understand how to work together to create positive change in our school and in our communities.” We believe an important way for us to help start our 9th graders on this path is to read Stamped: Racism, Antiracism and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi. This book offers wonderful tools for students to learn how to create positive change and give students a base understanding of the history of racism so they can become creative agents of change. To help us fulfill our mission in a remote context we want to provide every student with a hard copy of the book. By having their own copy we can emphasize a broader range of literacy skills and increased opportunity for working together and building critical listening skills and compassion. Teachers across departments have committed to creating units and lessons based on this text. By working with a common text across content areas we can support community and deep learning during this time when many students are feeling disconnected or isolated from their school community. We want to show students that anti-racism work and Black Lives Matter education apply in all subjects and are not just limited to Social Studies or Language Arts.
