My eighth-grade class is the very first eighth-grade class at our school. Having these novels from the beginning will ensure that relatable, diverse, and more modern literature is incorporated into the developing curriculum. Both of these novels will be used as companion novels to different units. Sandra Cisneros's The House on Mango Street will be paired with a unit entitled "Places We Call Home," and Trevor Noah's Born a Crime (Adapted for Young Readers) will be paired with a unit entitled "The Fight for Freedom." Currently, the units only consist of short stories and poetry. Adding novel studies will allow students to delve deeper into the themes of both units. Because character identification leads to literary absorption and both of these act as huge players in reading comprehension, I want to present my students with novels in which the characters look, sound, and live similarly to them. I know that my students will see themselves and/or each other in both of these novels, leading them to experience literary absorption in both a fictional and nonfictional text. Students will not only enjoy these books and grow academically, but they will also grow in empathy and understanding for one another.
