The world of education is ever-changing and constantly adapting. Children are simple, they crave belonging, love, and safety, that's IT. A prominent quote in the education world is, "A student must Maslow before they can Bloom." Abraham Maslow developed Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs that simply states, a child must feel safe and like they belong before any learning can occur. In my classroom, I use a flexible seating system in which students are allowed to choose where they will sit, and what tools they will use to help them learn best. I have many options for them already, but these new items will help give them even MORE of a selection. The wobble stools will allow them to comfortably "wiggle" in their seats in order for them to be able to move as they are learning. The Carpet Floor Spots will allow me to show options of where they can sit, that are socially distanced. They will choose a "dot" each day. The stools will be used at my teacher table during small group lessons. These are able to slide completely under the table, unlike a traditional chair, so when they are not in use it will allow room to socially distance. Lastly, you will see sensory activities. In my room this year I would like to utilize a "Calm Down Corner" so students can have a safe place to work through their emotions. If a child becomes dis-regulated in any way, their learning ability ceases until they are able to regulate again. This calm down corner will aide in guiding them through the self-regulation process. All of these items are also easy to disinfect after use because they have hard surfaces. I want my students to feel safe, heard, and that they have ownership of their learning!
