Not all students learn math at the same time in the same way. Some students need extra help, some are ready to move on quickly, and some just need reassurance. I believe in allowing students to move at their own pace. I provide guidance & facilitate learning, but students take ownership of their own learning, without relying solely on the teacher. Students can self-assess if they are understanding the material, if they want to move on, they can, if they need help they can quickly check in with me. I want a classroom setup where students have freedom & flexibility. We have organized a wonderful curriculum on Schoology to allow students to work independently, collaboratively, and with the teacher over the course of each unit. When a student needs help, the teacher is available to work with them in a small group setting & even give individual attention/instruction. As the teacher, I am able to float around room to work with students, even if they are at a different place in the learning process than their classmate. I can pull in a small group of students that need tutoring, or move a group of students together that are ready for enrichment. With movable furniture students can move quickly and we can adapt the lesson accordingly. If a student has a tech question they can just pull their desk over to me and then seamlessly move it back to their work space. Currently, my students often have to make multiple trips. They bring me their paper, but then need to go back and get their computer. They bring their computer, but then they forget their pencil. They are moving their desk, rather than moving their supplies. This will help minimize distractions and maximize learning.
