The pandemic has affected our education system in many different ways. Before COVID-19, the school where I work was able to afford additional learning resources according to each teacher's needs. Now, our priority is our students' health. A huge portion of the school budget is being redirected to cleaning supplies, technology, and safety equipment. However, as a classroom teacher, it is my responsibility to offer the best education possible, including good reliable resources aligned to South Carolina State Standards. The Scholastics ACTION Magazine is an excellent complementary ELA resource that has helped my students and me, in the classroom and at home. Each student will have access to the magazine and activities online, as well as a hard copy of it. My students and I have used it for the past 3 years and they love it. Moreover, on-going assessment data has shown excellent results. Here is a quick summary of what the magazine provides: "Scholastic Action provides a comprehensive set of teaching tools specifically designed to boost the confidence and skills of your striving readers, in language arts and other key content areas. Every article in the magazine is a complete skill-building kit. In-magazine activities in every issue build comprehension and foundational ELA skills such as text features, text evidence, compare and contrast, inferencing, summarizing, and more. Embedded comprehension supports, including a question to set the purpose for reading and prompts to pause and think, are provided directly in the text. Printable online skills sheets provide the essential practice your students need to reinforce key reading and writing strategies. Articles build knowledge and connect to science and social studies curriculums. Each article includes academic and domain-specific vocabulary words and practice resources. By the end of the year, your students will have learned essential words every reader needs to know."
