With all its frustrations and limitations, I believe that Covid-19 offers teachers an exciting opportunity to get creative to make learning both safe and fun for students. In addition to the intrinsic social, emotional, and mental benefits of being outside, an outdoor classroom during the time of Covid-19 offers students fresh air, more room to social distance, opportunities to collaborate, and when safe, a chance to remove masks. To complete my outdoor classroom, I am looking for a portable power station to run my projector and lap desks for each student. I was a backcountry instructor for 10 years, and I know that classes can be self-supported, rigorous, and simple, and that teachers can deliver high-quality instruction in an outdoor setting. I already have a number of resources to make the portable outdoor classroom possible, including a class set of camp chairs and an outdoor projector and screen. I am trying to think outside the "box" of expensive proposed outdoor spaces with my portable classroom. In a traditional classroom, I use the projector every day, especially when I teach my Introduction to Film class. I believe each class can divide and conquer, and quickly and efficiently assemble and put away the classroom each day, so that minimal class time is wasted. Moreover, when Covid-19 "goes away" I would continue to regularly use a portable outdoor classroom, as it keeps students excited and engaged.
