Music education is essential to helping our youth express their emotions in a positive and healthy way, while exploring the world around them and commenting on it in a productive and collaborative fashion. Over my years as a music and history teacher, I have developed a curriculum that is centered on student voice and building a community of collaborative musicians who support each other. I teach music in a hybrid fashion that includes instruments, bands, music production and music business with a significant focus on songwriting. With the onset of COVID-19, I developed a new curriculum that is designated to students learning and creating music remotely. By using Chromebooks and online recording software I can teach audio production, keyboard theory and songwriting. The only thing that I need is midi keyboards to tie everything together. Midi keyboards allow students to have every instrument sound at their fingertips and will allow them to explore the musical world in a holistic fashion. It will allow them to write and record their own music, while also being able to collaborate with others. By getting enough midi keyboards to have a classroom set, I will be able to have a music program at our school that will allow students to continue to grow in music, despite the difficult circumstances around them.
