I teach at Anansi Charter School, a rural school in Taos County New Mexico that specialized in individualized programming for students. Through its attention to individual needs, this school serves a higher than average percentage of learning disabled students. As a classroom teacher, I work to differentiate adequately to provide each student with the support he or she needs and the appropriate level of challenge to progress in his/her education. As an adjunct to my classroom duties, I coordinate a tutoring association that works in rural schools during school hours lending support to individual students and small groups. These tutors often provide additional support that the teachers cannot when they are attending to their whole class. By working during school hours, the tutoring association eliminates the burden of transportation and scheduling for parents seeking help for their children in rural areas.
