My students have been safe at home since March. I will be working hard to ensure their social and emotional well-being, as well as, recovering lost first grade skills due to the shutdown and summer backslide. As a teacher, I strive to build a classroom community where students feel safe and welcomed. I would like Teachers Pay Teachers gift cards and math manipulatives, so that I can purchase resources for all of my students' academic, social and emotional learning. Research shows that social and emotional learning increases academic achievement, and mathematics achievement increases when manipulatives are used. For this reason, I would like to use the Teachers Pay Teachers gift cards to purchase social and emotional curriculum resources, virtual manipulatives, games, activities, and stories that my students can use during in-person and virtual learning. Social and emotional learning is needed now more than ever. Teachers Pay Teachers has lessons, activities, and games to help my students deal with all of the uncertainty in our world today. Being able to purchase these items would help me help my students learn to deal with the emotions and issues they are experiencing in one-on-one, small group, and large groups settings. Additionally, our students are unable to share math manipulatives this year; therefore, additional manipulatives are needed to help students move from the concrete stage of learning to the abstract stage. For example, when learning to add or subtract. students can use unifix cubes to represent the numbers in the problem and physically move the cubes to see what happens in these processes. Overcoming the challenges of in-person and virtual learning during a pandemic, and the social-emotional health and well being of my students is more important now than ever. Thank you!
