With the advent of this spring's COVID-19 pandemic, schools and students have had to learn to teach and learn in multiple settings. Last spring, my art students learned to create art using supplies from around their homes. This fall, we may need to flex between learning at school and learning at home, so I'm assembling an Awesome Artists Kit for my students. Since students should use their own personal tools at school (avoiding sharing materials for safety), and may need to bring these tools home, I need to provide individual tools like scissors, paint sets, and glue, that previously were shared. Since I teach 600 students (the entire school) and have a very limited budget that was recently cut, my students need your help to access appropriate tools to create their art. I chose to select scissors as the first tool to include in the Awesome Artist Kit because it was the one I most often heard from my students that they didn't have at home. It broke my art heart when I'd suggest a student try to collage or sew or add something to their art at home, and they told me they couldn't because they didn't have scissors. We often came up with the solution of using torn paper, etc., but the Awesome Artists Kit will travel between home and school in a gallon zip plastic bag, along with a pencil, eraser, crayons, etc. through the year.
