I am a new teacher and will have my first class of 5th grade students walk through my doors in August. We are without a Social Studies curriculum in our district. Student's must rely on pamphlets to learn about American history. Books like "Eating the Plates" allow elementary teachers to educate their students about historical topics indirectly, and will prepare them for middle school. Without a curriculum, it is up to the educators to provide your children with alternate ways to teach them about topics such early settlements and the early tensions and relationships with the Native Americans.
