As a Title I school, our English as a Second Language students need ready access to translate materials, search vocabulary terms, have text and textbook passages read aloud, and access online materials and apps. --Readily translate vocabulary needed for Lucy Calkins Reading Units of Study. --Build background knowledge to access science, math, social studies. --Engage with peers using conversational English. --See materials through the use of photographs, Google images. --Utilize Google translator. --Provide translations of their school work so that parents can engage in student learning. --Engage in Fountas and Pinnell leveled literacy lessons. --Send home daily reading assignments pre-practiced at school to reinforce learning at home and add additional daily reading minutes. --At present the district provides students access to chromebooks, but no tool for these students as handy, efficient, portable as an iPad mini. Our expectation is that our English as a Second Language students can readily access grade-level materials both at school and at home. We will utilize the iPad minis to issue a 1:1 device to enable these students to reach or exceed grade-level reading expectations. Whether in class or at home, our students with the greatest language needs can have a ready resource to propel their learning. In our school -- educating ALL at or above grade level, means ALL.
