Stories provide the context for us to make meaning of our world. While stories are important to humanity because they serve as a means to connect people across boundaries of space and time, stories also tell readers about experiences, ideas, and that all lives matter. Research shows that culturally relevant teaching, where teachers use students’ cultures as a frame of reference and provide students access to books that reflect their identities, helps improve students ‘ reading engagement and performance on standardized tests. Highly motivated students engage in more recreational reading than less motivated students, and it is this quantity of reading that predicts students’ reading achievement. I would like to provide more relevant reading materials to our school's black and brown student population. Students will be able to check these books out for personal use and teachers will be able to use these books for classroom discussions.
