Hello my name is Kori Detmer, LCSW and I am the Safe School Professional at PASC. Students rely on the school social worker to learn skills to regulate and reset so they can manage strong feelings, navigate difficult social situations, and be in a better place to learn. They use tools taught during social work sessions and within the school day to learn to manage emotions, build perseverance when things are hard, learn to work with others, and how to make responsible decisions for themselves. With support and tools, they can ultimately thrive at school and in their relationships with others! Second Step is a highly regarded, evidence-based social emotional learning curriculum for students. It provides a researched framework to build crucial life skills to help kids better learn to manage their feelings, deal with frustrations and disappointments, resolve conflicts, and so much more. With students unable to attend school in person, students now more than ever need assistance in dealing with difficult social situations and feelings of stress and anxiety, while having to manage personal feelings without the in-person support of teachers and Safe School Professionals, and school counselors. It is more important now than ever to help our students build these crucial skills so they can more successfully manage challenging situations that they encounter daily.
