It is said that reading to a child everyday, or often as they grow up, will help the child become a fluent (on or above) grade level reader. However, some children never received the gift of stories being read to them often, and even those that did, at some point in their young childhood, have stopped hearing those stories from their caretakers. Especially now during this pandemic, parents/caretakers have less time to read to their children due to issuse from extra work, less work and the stress that robs precious time away from reading to children. Let young students listen to stories, so they can learn to voice their own. Giving the students an opportunity to enter a private world when they put headphones on, allows them to more fully focus on the text/story in front of them. This gives them a front row seat of learning how to properly use the elements of reading fluency like pausing for punctuation, using intonation, expression, and rate/speed. Once a student can model in their reading what they have been hearing, they will also better express themselves in writing. I want to create three listening centers in my classroom, so every student will get an opportunity to utilize them. In order to do that, I put in my Amazon Business order three sets of ten headphones (with microphones so they can use them with other programs too), three stereos that can be used for audible books, three jack boxes that allow each student to control their own volume, and a storage shelf to keep the supplies safe and protected when not in use.
