My students worked on Chromebooks to do graphic design last spring and really struggled. Besides having to adjust to a lesser online software, the Chromebooks’ keypad makes it very difficult to draw. If students had a mouse attached to their Chromebooks they would be much more successful. The mouse would allow for a greater range and sophistication of projects. My students are thrilled when they make something they like and so I am. I want them to be able to learn as much as they can for their artistic growth. I also want them to be as employable as possible. Students also struggled with not be able to right click to copy images into a file. Increased frustration, lack or side by side structure, new software overwhelm, and the challenges of working from home all made for more student desertion. With a mouse, students will feel more familiarity to workflow of the desktops at school. Ease of success for my students is invaluable. Also, with limits of the online software, I need to increase the possibility of what students can do with this basic software by including drawing with a mouse in some projects. I will really need that flexibility if I end up designing curriculum for students to work from home for an extended time period.
