Please heed the call to help my students learn how to navigate discussion about racism, equity, and police brutality. All American Boys, a novel by Jason Reynolds presents all perspectives of stakeholders involved in an incident of police brutality, one that is eerily reminiscent of the many incidents my students have seen on the news for years and have become the impetus for the nationwide protests emerging after the George Floyd murder. The current 10th grade curriculum is far and large representative of the status quo white perspective and reading All American Boys will allow my students to hear all perspectives and will validate their voices in the fight for social justice and racial equity.
