With these books, my students and I will be able to delve into a story that has diverse representation of people, places, and ideas. Too often, English teachers fall back on teaching "classic" literature that is often outdated, Eurocentric, and less accessible to students. I want my students to see their own lives, problems, and realities represented in the texts that we read. Nothing engages a student in a book more than when they can relate to it and learn from it at the same time. As I work with many reluctant readers, I believe that diversifying our classroom reading to make it more accessible and meaningful to students could increase their engagement greatly.
